29 Aug #189 – Gluten Freek with Carmel Alifano
This week episode is about Gluten Freek with Carmel Alifano. Carmel is the creator of “GlutenFreek” – an amazing cake and cookie company based in Noosa. A company providing a selection of gluten, dairy, egg, soy and refined sugar-free yummies!
She has been through a lot, having been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 20 years ago. Having to deal with taking masses of drugs and using an ileostomy bag for 9 months when she was 25 years old. Whilst her intestine was healing after surgery to save her life from a ruptured intestine. Carmel now sees this as the best thing that ever happened to her, but it was years before the positives started to appear.
She moved to Queensland from Sydney and started to meet people who were interested in nutrition and holistic health. Which was something the doctors hadn’t discussed with her at all, even when probed. After being introduced to the “Specific Carbohydrate Diet”. Carmel got her hands on the Healing Foods cookbook and began to educate herself about a new way of eating. She fell in LOVE with the cakes and has been baking delicious goodies ever since.
In 2012, almost by accident, she connected with Dragan from Dramanti Café in Wynnum, Brisbane (@dramanti_coffee_wynnum). She started baking gluten and dairy-free cakes for his café! Carmel never planned to start the business but as it unfolded. She was so in her element delivering these cakes to people all over Brisbane and now Noosa. Getting to meet her customers and see how much pleasure they experience enjoying gluten-free and nutritious cakes.
In the last few years, Carmel has also been the victim of domestic violence, which she openly shares with the desire to help others. To see the signs and not have to go through what she has. We are so grateful to her for this courage to speak out and to remind us that domestic violence isn’t only physical – it’s important for us to support those experiencing emotional, psychological and verbal abuse as well. She shares this, not because she wants pity, but because she wants to help others. And create more awareness around this topic so that others can hopefully not follow in her footsteps.
We go deep into her illness and how she’s used nutrition to help heal herself to now be drug-free and ileostomy bag free. How finding yoga helped to connect her more to what’s important and navigating life as a single mum. After experiencing domestic violence for three years. Carmel is an absolute warrior, a down to earth lover of life and a caring, nurturing soul. It was such a pleasure to have her as a guest on our podcast!
